Going Beyond: Communication Strategies for More Effective Leadership and Problem Solving
Nixon Peabody
Manchester, NH
Nov 15, 2012
Today’s women in business are more dynamic, educated and engaged than ever before. Since 2000, women represent at least 57% of undergraduates, and among 2010 J.D. graduates 47.2% were female. Still, barriers to achievement and success persist; since 2001 there has been a 23% gender pay gap with some research even indicating that this increases with education. Among Fortune 500 companies, women occupy 15% of the board seats and only 3% of CEO’s are women. We will explore what women can do to challenge these statistics and access their full potential in order to create a more satisfying and rewarding professional experience. Women bring tremendous strengths and talents to leadership positions. They tend to be highly collaborative, engaging and thorough. These traits lead to success in a variety of roles including networking, leadership, being part of a team and navigating change. Despite these strides, women often report feeling disempowered and stuck when encountering someone who does not respond to their communication style. Drawing from the DiSC © model, we will examine four communication styles which can be utilized to achieve more effective problem solving and leadership. Unlike others, this model is designed to identify behavioral “comfort zones” rather than personality dimensions. Participants will be coached on how to identify their preferred style as well as preferred styles of others. Once you have gained these insights, you will have a strategy for how to communicate with anyone in any situation. As a follow-up, participants will have the opportunity to complete a DiSC Assessment at a later date for a more in-depth analysis of their default style. -

Save the Date: Judge Gertner Book Signing and Wine and Cheese Reception
UNH School of Law
Concord, NH
Oct 11, 2011
In April 1994, with twenty years of groundbreaking and controversial cases behind her, Nancy Gertner was appointed to serve as a Federal Judge in Massachusetts. In Defense of Women: Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate, Gertner reflects upon her career as an outspoken, “outsider” lawyer, representing criminal and civil cases focused on women’s rights, civil liberties, and breaking down the gender barriers of the 1970s and 80s. In Defense of Women chronicles one woman’s revolutionary career at a time when the world around her was trying to hold her back. For young lawyers looking for guidance, Gertner writes that, when it comes to becoming a judge, there is “no right way, no clear path,” noting that, “the issue is less where you start than where you end up.” The lessons she imparts about fighting for what you believe in, and striving against all odds to create the life you want for yourself, ring as true for women in the 21st century as they did in the 1970s. Gertner wrote the book to record those struggles. “I wanted to memorialize these stories, if only for my kids, my friends, myself,” she writes. “I had been there, done that. It had been quite a ride; important lessons had been learned personally and professionally; and maybe—just maybe—some good had been done.” Copies of Judge Gertner's book will be available for purchase at the event. -
Annual Fall Reception

On September 22, 2011, the NHWBA will be holding its 12th annual Fall Reception at The Concord Country Club. The reception will include the presentation of the 2011 Marilla M. This year, the Ricker award will be presented to Lucy C. Hodder, Esquire. Attorney Hodder is a shareholder in the health care practice group of Rath, Young and Pignatelli, P.C. She has been named one of The Best Lawyers in America by Woodward White, as well as a New England Super Lawyer for health care law. She is a board member of the Women's Policy Institute and was appointed to the New Hampshire Commission on the Status of Women beginning in 1998, and chaired the commission from 2003 to 2004. In support of the nomination of Attorney Hodder for the Ricker Award, one of her nominators wrote: "In addition to her strong commitment to her clients, Lucy is equally devoted to advancing the causes of women to improve their health, welfare and well-being and to increase the likelihood of women's success and achievement in all avenues of life. She has been an outstanding mentor and role model for younger women attorneys, both within the firm and around the State." Join us for a night of recognition of the achievements of Attorney Hodder, as well as a night of networking with our members. The reception is from 5:30-7:30p.m. and is open to the public. No RSVP is required. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be provided.
